“Fairfax media have reported that a Melbourne woman, 26 weeks pregnant, wants to abort her baby because of family and relationship problems,” FamilyVoice Victoria director Peter Stevens said today.
“She says she cannot raise the child because she lacks support. But nowhere in the article is there any mention of her win-win option of adoption. There are many couples in Victoria who would love to give her child a happy, stable home.”
The woman claims to be suicidal, but apparently has not been told that an abortion – especially a late abortion – could itself damage her mental health. The death rate including suicide for women one year after an abortion is far higher than the rate for women after childbirth.
“This new case has come to light just one day after Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins MLC introduced her Infant Viability Bill in the Victorian Legislative Council,” Peter Stevens said. “Greens and Sex Party MPs tried to block the bill at the first reading – an almost unheard of display of intolerance.
“If the bill passes, women who are more than 20 weeks pregnant would not have the right to an abortion except in the case of a medical emergency. It would protect women from the serious physical and mental consequences of a late abortion, and it would protect children.
“Dr Carling-Jenkins is a champion for both women and children,” Peter Stevens said.
