The killing of free speech
Thursday, January 8, 2015

“Three Islamic jihadists murdered ten journalists and two policemen in Paris yesterday,” FamilyVoice research officer Ros Phillips said today.  “But they killed much more than that.  They killed free speech.”

Ros Phillips said most media outlets already treat Islam with great deference.  “Compared with the frequent attacks on the Bible and Christianity, we see very little robust debate about the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith,” she said.

“The most tragic aspect of the Paris murders of those brave souls who dared to say what they thought with wit and humour is that few if any Western journalists will now show similar courage.

“But the bellicose elements in Islam will never be defeated by appeasement.  How will the upcoming generation of young Muslims learn to analyse their faith, if no one dares to speak publicly about any of the hard questions?

“Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental freedoms that undergird Western democracies.  Already it is being whittled away, bit by bit.

“I urge Tony Abbott to rethink his failure to reform the Racial Discrimination Act section 18C, and strike a blow for freedom!”
