Ending AIDS: we need to stop transmissions
Monday, July 21, 2014

“Victorian health minister David Davis has announced a move to amend the law criminalising intentional HIV transmission.  I have serious concerns about this move,” FamilyVoice Victoria state officer Peter Stevens said today.

“Is the minister aware of the World Health Organization warning that HIV rates are ‘exploding’ especially among men who have sex with men?” Pastor Stevens said.

“Rates of HIV infection in homosexual men are rising at a time when stigma against homosexuality is dropping to an all-time low.”

Gottfried Hirnschall, head of the WHO HIV department, has warned that men who have sex with men are 19 times more likely than the general population to be infected by HIV.

“The fact that infection rates are rising despite numerous safe sex campaigns strongly suggests that we need a better deterrent,” Pastor Stevens said.

“I caution against taking steps that could encourage the major transmitters of HIV in this country to continue their unhealthy behaviour.

“We need courage to face the truth: we need to stop transmissions.”
