“The over half million people who watched Kevin Rudd’s response on same-sex “marriage” on Q & A last night should know that Mr Rudd’s arguments were based on three false premises,” FamilyVoice research officer Ros Phillips said today.
Myth 1: Homosexuals are born that way
“Science shows Mr Rudd’s first premise – that homosexuals are born that way – is not true. Studies of identical twins show that where one twin is homosexual, the other is heterosexual in over 85% of cases – even though each has the same genes and hormone exposure in the womb. Longitudinal studies also show that many teenagers who said they were same-sex attracted at age 16 no longer had those feelings ten years later,” Ros Phillips said.
Myth 2: We can disregard Bible teaching on marriage because the Bible also says slavery is natural
“Mr Rudd claimed that the Bible says slavery is a natural condition – something it never says. Unlike all other cultures of the time, Old Testament laws on slaves required them to be treated well and, if Hebrew, to be freed after six years. Cruel 18-19th century slavery by the UK and US has nothing in common with the apostle Paul’s teaching in Ephesians. Paul was referring to bond-servants, who could be treated very well, as members of a master’s household. Further, in the book of Philemon, Paul urges Philemon to take Onesimus back, “no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother”. In 1Corinthians 7:20-23, Paul advises slaves to seek freedom if they can. In Galatians 3:28, he says: “… there is neither slave nor free…, all are one in Christ Jesus” – again repudiating the cultural norms of his time.
Myth 3: The Bible’s fundamental principle is one of universal love.
“God is love – but Jesus, God’s son, also said: “All who love me will do what I say.” Jesus condemned every form of sexual immorality, including homosexuality, bestiality and incest (summed up by the Greek word porneia, which he denounced as evil in Matthew 15:18-19). Paul also condemned homosexual acts in Romans 1:27. Jesus was very clear in Matthew 19:4-5 and Mark 10:6-8 that marriage is between one man and one woman.
“Kevin Rudd’s deceptive response to Queensland pastor Matt Prater on Q&A was in marked contrast with his appeal to Christian voters just hours earlier, based on his profession of faith,” Mrs Phillips said. “Our PM has two faces – voters beware!”
