“Just over three years ago, shortly before he was deposed as PM, Kevin Rudd promised to retain the natural meaning of marriage as a union of a man and a woman,” FamilyVoice research officer Ros Phillips said today.
“Less than three months ago, he broke that promise – saying he now supported same-sex marriage. But he then made a new promise. He said on his blog: ‘For the record, I will not be taking any leadership role on this issue nationally’.
“Last night on national television, Kevin Rudd proceeded to break this promise too,” Ros Phillips said. “In direct contravention of his vow to shun any leadership role on gay marriage, he made the issue his main priority if re-elected as Australian Prime Minister. He promised there would be a same sex marriage bill before the parliament within the first 100 days of his government. A complete about-face!”
Ros Phillips said Mr Rudd has ignored science. “The purpose of marriage is to provide the safest environment, with both mum and dad role models, for the raising of the next generation,” she said. “Marriage needs to be strengthened, not redefined.”
FamilyVoice Australia has sent a ten-question election survey to all 54 parties registered for the federal election, and some party replies are already on the website. Responses from individual candidates are also being sought. The second question is on the meaning of marriage.
“We believe that Kevin Rudd may regret breaking his promise on this issue,” Ros Phillips said. “As the Tasmanian elections demonstrated in May, true marriage is a vote-winner.”
