Election Survey - Western Australia 2013 - Q8

Q8 - Same-sex "marriage"

Marriage is a lifelong exclusive commitment between a man and a woman, providing the best environment for raising the next generation. Under the Australian Constitution marriage is a commonwealth responsibility and any state law relating to marriage would be invalid. Due to the fundamental importance of marriage to our society, marriage laws need to be uniform throughout the nation.

Would you vote against any bill to legalise same-sex "marriage" in WA?

The Western Australian Parliament has no ability to legislate with respect to the recognition of same sex marriage at a State level. Marriage in Western Australia and all other Australian States and Territories is a Commonwealth issue, by virtue of s. 51(xxi) of the Commonwealth Constitution, and is governed by the Marriage Act 1961 (Cth). The Western Australia Government's role is restricted to registering marriages which are performed by authorised Commonwealth celebrants who conduct marriages in accordance with Commonwealth Law.

Australian Christians

Australian Christians upholds the definition of marriage as the union intended for life between a man and a woman only, to the exclusion of all others. Consequently, Australian Christians will oppose any move to change the Marriage Act to accommodate other forms of union such as gay marriage and polygamy.

Australian Christians will also introduce legislation to prevent the recognition of polygamous unions legally sanctioned overseas.
