Election Survey - Victoria 2014 - Q6

Q6 - Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

Euthanasia means the intentional killing of a patient, rather than providing treatment or palliative care. Switching off life support is not euthanasia. Evidence from the Netherlands, Oregon and Belgium shows that legalising euthanasia or assisted suicide has led to the deaths of persons who did not ask for euthanasia, or were not terminally ill, or were suffering treatable depression.

Would you vote against any bill that would legalise euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide?

Unsure.

The Victorian Labor Party’s 2014 election Platform endorsed quality end-of-life care, which relieves pain and suffering and provides empowering support to family, friends and carers.

To better deliver legal frameworks and care programs, Labor will facilitate the use of Advanced Health Care Directives to refuse or request treatment for a future condition, subject to appropriate checks and balances including regular reviews; support better community education on the provisions of the Medical Treatment Act 1988; help people understand their treatment options and future preferences (including end-of-life care); and expand palliative care services and options including in-home care, in rural and remote areas.

Labor MPs will exercise a conscience vote on any private member’s euthanasia bill.
